What to Expect When Panasonic Brings Large Workforce Opportunities to Town

August 5, 2022

Panasonic recently announced its plans to build the world’s largest EV battery plant in Kansas that will manufacture and supply lithium-ion batteries to EV makers. The project is expected to bring up to $4 billion in investments for the state.

The buzz around the announcement is the enormous impact the factory will have on the state’s workforce. The Kansas job market is expected to see growth with an estimated increase of 4,000 direct jobs and the creation of more than 16,000 construction jobs, according to Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly.

Many local organizations and consultants played an important role in laying the groundwork for bringing Panasonic to the area. A well-attended event brought those that played a role in the selection process together for the announcement.

“Part of managing a workforce consulting firm means you need to stay on the pulse of changing market conditions and its impact on hiring, onboarding, and retaining good talent,” said CEO for Percipio Workforce Solutions, Jim Roy. “Along with the opportunities, there will be workforce challenges as well.”

Future-Proof the Onboarding Process

In addition to putting more money in the pockets of thousands of workers, workforce departments will need to step up when it comes to the onboarding process. Roy, an onboarding expert for over 30 years, says several specific actions impact the orientation. Throughout the onboarding process, Roy recommends the following components in your program:

  • Identify and share the company’s enduring unique values and goals to guide the development of an onboarding program
  • Partnering new hires with a mentor through a buddy program
  • One-on-one follow-up communication strategies 30, 60, and 90 days from the hire date

“These are some of the components that impact the overall success because each program is specific and more detailed to the role and the company,” said Roy. “Onboarding is often confused with orientation. While orientation is necessary for completing paperwork, onboarding is a comprehensive process involving management and other employees and can last up to several months.”
